Cadila to report breakthrough on cardiac disorders

Ahmedabad, India-based pharma major Cadila Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with McMaster University of Hamilton, Canada, claims to have done a revolutionary research on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) targeted at asymptomatic healthy people. The company is said to launch a product that will considerably reduce the mortality due to sudden cardiac disorder.

According to the company, a research team of 57 cardiologists led by Dr Salim Yusuf, Dean of Cardiovascular Services, McMaster University worked on the project for two years to make it a success. Dr Yusuf on behalf of investigators of Indian Polycap study, sponsored by Cadila Pharmaceuticals will present the findings at American College of Cardiology ACC’09, Orlando, today. Polycap trial conducted across 53 centers in India on 2053 healthy subjects, was led by Dr Prem Pais, Dean, St John’s College, Bangalore, India.

Mr JP Parswani, President, Cadila Pharmaceuticals says, the research team has come up with a new therapy, a new approach, a comprehensive treatment that is going to set a benchmark in the treatment of CVDs. The product is not just a substitute for lifestyle management, but it complements the same. It would help to bring down the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
According to Mr IA Modi, Chairman, Cadila Pharmaceuticalsa, various therapies are currently available for secondary prophylaxis of CVDs, but none for primary prophylaxis. With the burgeoning epidemic of CVD, especially in low income countries, effective preventive strategies need to be urgently implemented. Cadila Pharma took it as a challenge to develop a therapy to address primary prophylaxis.
